Solutions for You

If we are in those Dog Days of Summer and it is 95 degrees both inside and out, or Old Man Winter has left his mark on the Miami Valley and you awaken to a house that is 56 degree, there are many things you can do and check before calling Cool Solutions.

If:  the outside unit will not come on, the reason might be

  • Thermostat is not set properly
  • Emergency or shut off switch is turned off (usually a red button around copper line or line coming into the unit)
  • Blown fuse in the panel box (replace both fuses)
  • Circuit breaker is tripped or off (sometimes the breaker will trip but will not move.  Always turn off and back on to reset, even if it looks like it is on.)
  • The outdoor disconnect is turned off (some have an internal pull-out plug)
  • Condensate pump or safety switch could be opened at the blower or furnace unit (check the pump; it is usually located near the indoor unit)
  • Unit may be in "lock out"  (reset by turning off and then back on)

If:  you are seeing ice anywhere on the heat pump or air conditioner, some possible causes might be
  • The air filter is clogged or blocked
  • The air return is blocked
  • The supply and/or return vents are closed
  • Air conditioner is running with windows open
  • The thermostat is set too low

Ice on a heat pump or air conditioner is not normal and indicates there is a problem.  You may find ice on the indoor unit, outdoor unit or even on the interconnecting refrigerant lines.  To avoid this, we recommend never setting the thermostat below 70 degrees.  Keep in mind, if air conditioning is needed during the winter months, a service technician can install a part that cycles the compressor so it will not freeze up.

If:  the gas furnace won’t come on, it may be because
  • Thermostat is not set properly
  • The emergency or shut off switch is turned off (usually a red button around the burner area near the gas valve.  If this keeps tripping, a service technician is needed.)
  • The fuse is blown in the panel box (replace both fuses)
  • The disconnect, looks like a light switch and is next to the unit, is turned off.  (This is one of the most common things we see because it gets turned off by accident.)
  • The condensate pump or safety switch is open at the blower or furnace unit (check the pump, usually located near the indoor unit)
  • The unit is in lock out.  (Reset by turning off then turning back on.  It may be necessary to turn the power off then back on.  If this problem persists, a technician is needed.)
  • The pilot light is out; try relighting  (Units over 10 years old may have a pilot light — there will be a pilot button on the gas valve.)
  • The gas is off at the meter, the gas valve or the gas line at the furnace
  • There is an obstruction of the PVC pipe that vents the furnace from the house (only on a 90% furnace)
